Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is a common symptom associated with anxiety and it is very embarrassing. Excessive sweating can not only lead to your clothes dripping with sweat but also to unpleasant body odor. Fear of sweating profusely may ultimately worsen your anxiety which in turn will make you sweat more.

Cutting back on strong stimulants like caffeine and refined sugar which deprive your body of much needed stress fighting vitamin B should already have you well on your way along the road to recovery. Psychotherapy, biofeedback and relaxation therapy have been used with much success in the treatment of anxiety. The good news is that these techniques may also be beneficial in the treatment of excessive sweating.

Some other self-help techniques that you can try include the following:

  • Antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride helps to clog up the pores which reduce sweating. You should apply these before bed time as you are prone to sweat less at night.
  • Loose clothing will allow air to flow freely over your skin allowing sweat to evaporate.
  • Clothes that have a looser weave tend to be cooler than clothes with a tight weave for example choose linens over silk.
  • Keep a handkerchief with you to wipe off any sweat before shaking hands with someone.
  • Spicy foods can make you sweat more, so rather avoid these.
  • Wear an absorbent undershirt or camisole to help soak up excessive sweat.
  • Apply an antiperspirant before a stressful event like a meeting or going on a date.
  • If you sweat excessively at night choose lightweight bed linen made from absorbent material like cotton. Ensure that your room is adequately ventilated by opening a window.
  • If your sweat causes bad body odor use an antibacterial soap and shower at least once a day.
  • Another way to avoid strong smelling sweat is to stay away from strong smelling foods like onion and garlic.
  • Herbal remedies like sage tea, chamomile tea, Valerian root and St. John’s Wort may be beneficial in reducing excessive sweating. Consult with your physician before using any herbal remedy since these may interact with other medication.
  • If you do not have fear of needles you can even try acupuncture as this type of treatment has been used before in the treatment of excessive sweating.

Anxiety does not need to make you sweat. Many people just like you have suffered from anxiety and many people after you will suffer from anxiety. Anxiety is a treatable condition which does not have the right to deprive you of a happy and fulfilled life.
